💡About this test

The match rests on two lines of research. The first describes breed temperament: veterinarians Benjamin and Lynette Hart summarized expert ratings of behavior in dozens of breeds, and Hannes Lohi’s team in Finland used data on 5,726 cats to show that breeds differ in activity, sociability and fearfulness, and that these traits are partly inherited. The second line is about you: schedule, home size, children and allergies have the biggest say in whether a cat settles into a family.

🐱🐶Cat or dog: which suits you better

The quiz also answers whether a cat or a dog suits you. In a study by Sam Gosling and colleagues (2010) with more than 4,500 participants, dog people were on average more extraverted and agreeable, while cat people were more often open to new experiences. Beyond personality, though, everyday life makes the call.

Walks🐱Not needed, a litter box is enough🐶2 to 3 times a day in any weather
Time alone🐱Many breeds calmly wait 8 to 10 hours🐶A long workday is hard on most dogs
Space🐱An apartment with shelves and a scratching post is enough🐶Large breeds need room
Training🐱Learns, but on its own terms🐶Needs training and commands
Time per day🐱30 to 60 minutes of play and care🐶1 to 2 hours of walks and activities
Lifespan🐱About 14 years on average🐶About 12 years on average
Travel🐱A neighbor can look after it for a weekend🐶Needs a pet sitter or boarding

🗓️History & development

1871

The first cat show takes place at London’s Crystal Palace, organized by the artist Harrison Weir, author of the first breed standards.

1906

The CFA is founded in the USA and grows into one of the largest cat registries in the world.

1949

The International Cat Federation, FIFe, is created and unites clubs across Europe and beyond.

1979

TICA is founded; today it recognizes more than 70 breeds.

2007

Geneticists study the DNA of 979 cats and show that the domestic cat descends from the Near Eastern wildcat and was domesticated in the era of the first farmers.

2017

A study of 2,802 cats describes the “Feline Five” personality traits: neuroticism, extraversion, dominance, impulsiveness and agreeableness.

2019

Finnish scientists use data on 5,726 cats to prove that breeds differ in behavior, with heritability of personality traits between 0.4 and 0.53.

🎮How to take it

Answer 20 questions about your home, schedule and what you expect from a pet. Pick the option that honestly describes your life right now, not the ideal picture: the accuracy of the match depends on it. At the end you will see your breed with a compatibility score, a breakdown across 9 factors and three more breeds that fit.

🎓About the methodology

The 20 questions add up to a profile across nine factors: energy, affection, independence, talkativeness, coat care, tolerance of kids and other pets, allergies, size and dog-like traits such as enjoying training. Each of the 40 breed profiles draws on the veterinarian survey in “Your Ideal Cat” (Hart & Hart, 2013), population studies of breed behavior (Salonen et al., 2019; Mikkola et al., 2021; Wilhelmy et al., 2016) and the breed standards of TICA, CFA and FIFe. The comparison is asymmetric: if a breed is louder or more demanding than you can handle, the penalty is large, and if it is calmer than expected, the penalty is mild. Factors you feel strongly about weigh more than neutral ones. The result is a compatibility percentage. The cat or dog scale looks at how much you like dogs, how much time you spend at home and how active you are, building on the study by Gosling and colleagues (2010) on differences between cat people and dog people. The result is for information only and does not replace meeting the actual cat and talking to a breeder or a vet.

❓Frequently asked questions

🤔

Which cat breed is best for an apartment?

Most breeds live happily in an apartment, and what matters is energy, not square footage. Calm breeds such as the British Shorthair, Ragdoll, Persian, Exotic and Scottish Fold are content with a sofa and a window perch. Bengals, Abyssinians and Savannahs need a floor-to-ceiling cat tree and active play every day.

💡

Which cat is best for someone with allergies?

No breed is fully hypoallergenic: the main allergen, Fel d 1, is produced by the skin and saliva of every cat. Many allergy sufferers tolerate Siberians, Balinese, Russian Blues, Devon Rexes, Cornish Rexes and Sphynxes better. Spend a few hours with a cat of the breed before you buy, and keep in mind that neutered males and females usually produce less allergen.

🎯

What cat should I get if I work long hours?

If your cat will be alone for 8 to 10 hours, choose an independent breed: British or American Shorthair, Chartreux, Russian Blue or Norwegian Forest Cat. Siamese, Oriental, Burmese cats and Sphynxes struggle with solitude, so for them it is better to adopt two cats at once.

✨

Which cat breed is best for a family with kids?

The Maine Coon, Ragdoll, Siberian, Birman, American Shorthair and Abyssinian are known for patience with children. Even the gentlest cat needs its own hideout, though, and kids should learn how to pick a cat up and why they should not wake it.

🔮

Should I get a cat or a dog?

Your result includes a separate Cat or Dog scale. It considers how much time you spend at home, whether you are ready to walk and train a pet and which animal you feel closer to. In a study by Gosling and colleagues (2010) of more than 4,500 people, dog people were on average more extraverted, while cat people were more often open to new experiences. If the scale points to a dog, we will suggest our dog breed quiz.

🎪

How does the quiz work and how accurate is it?

Your answers become a profile across 9 factors that is compared with data on 40 breeds. Breed sets tendencies: Finnish researchers estimate the heritability of behavior traits at 0.4 to 0.53. The rest depends on kitten socialization and living conditions, so the quiz shows where to look, and the final choice is best made after meeting the cat.

🌟

Which breeds are included in the quiz?

The quiz covers the 40 most popular breeds in the world: Ragdoll, Maine Coon, British Shorthair, Scottish Fold, Persian, Sphynx, Bengal, Siamese, Exotic Shorthair, Siberian, Russian Blue, Devon Rex, Abyssinian, Norwegian Forest Cat, American Shorthair, Birman, Munchkin, Oriental Shorthair, Burmese, Cornish Rex, Savannah, Turkish Angora, Himalayan, Egyptian Mau, Tonkinese, Somali, Balinese, Chartreux, Selkirk Rex, Ocicat, Turkish Van, Manx, American Curl, Japanese Bobtail, Bombay, Ragamuffin, Kurilian Bobtail, Donskoy, Singapura and Korat.

🎭

Should I buy a purebred cat or adopt from a shelter?

Either path works if the cat’s personality matches your life. According to data from veterinary clinics in England on 4,009 cats, mixed-breed cats lived 14 years on average and purebreds 12.5. The quiz helps you understand which temperament to look for, and you can find a friend with that character in a shelter too. If you choose a breed, buy from a cattery that health-tests the parents for inherited diseases.
