Six Facets of Character: From Dark to Light

The Dark and Light Triad describe six core traits that mark two opposite poles in how we relate to other people. The dark side uses people as a means; the light side sees inherent value in them. Most of us blend traits from both sides in different proportions. This section helps you understand each trait, recognize it in yourself and others, and learn how to protect yourself or grow.

The Dark Triad

Three traits describing a tendency to exploit others for personal gain. Recognizing these patterns helps you protect yourself in relationships and at work.

The Light Triad

Three traits describing genuine interest in people and respect for their dignity. They can be cultivated through daily practices.

Dark Core vs Light Core

The Dark Triad

Research by Moshagen and colleagues identified the "D-factor" - a common dark factor of personality unifying narcissism, machiavellianism, and psychopathy. The hallmark: willingness to place self-interest above others, causing them harm without remorse.

The Light Triad

Kaufman and colleagues (2019) described the "Light Core" as the opposite of the D-factor. The hallmark: the ability to see each person as having intrinsic worth, not as an instrument for achieving one’s own goals.
