About the methodology
This test is built on the methodology of geographical literacy assessment developed by the National Geographic Society. Questions cover five macro-regions: Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Oceania. Each region is represented by five questions of increasing difficulty. The test evaluates crystallized intelligence (Gc in the Cattell-Horn-Carroll model), specifically its geographical component: accumulated knowledge of the world's political geography.
According to the National Geographic-Roper Survey of 2006, only 37% of young Americans could locate Iraq on a map, and 50% couldn't identify the state of New York. Similar studies in Europe and Asia demonstrate comparable gaps in geographical literacy. Knowledge of capitals serves as a basic indicator of general awareness of world political geography and correlates with educational attainment and cultural capital.
The dynamic scoring system considers not only the correctness of the answer but also response speed. A fast correct answer indicates automatic retrieval, while a slow correct answer suggests effortful recall. Both types of knowledge are valuable, but the former reflects a deeper level of information assimilation.
